What is a B Corp?
Well, to start, B stands for 'Benefit'. Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance. It's like LEED certification but for a business, not just a building. The outcome is a comprehensive measurement of a company's impact on its employees, suppliers, community and the environment.
The Mission/Purpose/Action/Value/Vision Statement of our company is: "Building authentic relationships around meaningful work."
This statement guides how we see our 'fit' in the world – both at work and in broader society. Winston Churchill put it this way:
"We make a living by what we get but we make a life by what we give."
At, IMG we believe that we must balance the two – at least in equal measure.
For us, community projects always begin with the idea of 'meaningful work' … but that idea needs some exploration:
Maslow's "Hierarchy of Needs" posits that people must fulfill their basic needs - food, shelter and security - before they can start worrying about higher order needs: progressing from "belonging" to "esteem" to "self–actualization". At IMG, often our candidates and clients are already working on these "higher-order needs". And hopefully our stewardship of their careers and projects can provide a few more toeholds on the climb.
There are many people, however, who haven't yet achieved meaningful employment … much less meaningful work. At IMG, we believe our 'social responsibility' is to build partnerships and personal relationships that help people through those early stages of 'meaningful employment'. Working locally, nationally and internationally with partners who specialize in basic education and employment, we seek to provide "toeholds" that can help people move along their own journey to fulfillment.
"Building authentic connections around meaningful work" is about encouraging people’s innate gifting to flourish. At IMG, we invest to see this happen both in the workplace and in the community.
