Our client, one of the largest financial industry clients in Canada, has an immediate need for a Designer Researcher. This is a contract position for one (1) year located in Toronto, ON (Temporary Remote).

What are the main responsibilities of the role?

They are responsible for:

• developing and executing research plans

• employing and facilitating design thinking activities

• conducting generative/evaluative research, interviews, and synthesis

• working with the design teams and cross-functional teams to inform the direction of research

• formulate points-of-views and recommendations based on findings

• present findings to wider teams

What capabilities makes the designer you’re replacing (or current designers on your team) successful?

• Proactively identifying opportunities for research to inform product strategy and design decisions

• Being able to determine appropriate research methods to use based on the needs

• distinguish opportunities when research and testing should be employed

What does the future state of success look like for the new designer?

Success would be:

• taking the lead and providing direction on all research activities

• improving and further establishing the design research practice and its impact

• validating and uncovering truths, thereby increasing confidence and reducing risks for all initiatives

• built a strong working relationship and providing support to fellow design researchers and designers

• establishing relationships across teams

What are the must have skills (4-5 max)?

• Well established research processes and methodologies

• Experience in facilitating group activities

• Conducting moderated and unmoderated research using various industry standards (Ie.

• Analytical mindset

• Ability to convey thoughts and findings in presentations in a concise manner

What are the nice to have skills (3-4 max)?

• Quantitative / behavioural data analysis

• Experience with our current tool set: UserZoom,, Optimal Workshop, Fable, Figma

• Working experience within a design team construct

• Worked in product development setting

• Previous experience in Financial Institutions and concepts

What skills would you like to build within your team?

I would like to continue to build the teams product mindset to help align our initiatives and decision making through a more common understanding with broader team. 

For each design discipline, I would like them to continue to add on their skillsets and at the same time learn about the duties of their design counterparts to be able to streamline our ways of working.

What type of research engagement model do you have?

Design researcher will work embedded within a squad model and would deal with both Generative and Evaluative research.

What are the hours of work? Please specify break times as well.

9am to 5pm – 37.5 hours a week. As a contractor there are no benefits, or paid vacation time, contractors will need to take 20 unpaid days off a year and do not get paid for statutory holidays.

What program/technology/software knowledge is essential for this role? Describe in what capacity the selected candidate will be using it?

Figma will be used the majority of the time, we also use Mural and Keynote.

Soft Skills:

Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to collaborate with other designers and cross-functional team members, ability to manage stakeholders and build relationships. Experience in facilitating workshops is a nice to have.
