The successful candidate will be a senior member of the Central Engineering Department in Sudbury, Ontario supporting North Atlantic Operations. The candidate will be responsible to provide mechanical engineering services to various plants and mines. 

The position requires the person to be capable of producing innovative engineering solutions to operating and maintenance problems. In addition, the person must have the capability of preparing project scopes of work and associated work packages for construction.

The position involves regular trips to underground mines and to the various surface plants. The candidate must possess a valid driver license.

Accountabilities:

  • Leads a team of design personnel to complete engineering designs and studies.
  • Responsible for integrity of designs produced under his/her technical direction and legally approves drawings as per the Professional Engineers Act.
  • Provides technical direction and troubleshooting to plants.
  • Highlights mechanical maintenance shortcomings and makes recommendations based on field inspections & audits and prepares the relevant reports.
  • Participates in the review of construction, commissioning and start-up functions.
  • Applies sound engineering knowledge and exercises leadership, mentoring and training to other design and engineering personnel.
  • Conducts reviews of engineering consultant's engineering designs, drawings and specifications on assigned projects.
  • Approves or reviews engineering estimates, drawings, calculations, functional specifications, data sheets, equipment specifications, scopes of work, fulfilment of PHR action items, FEL estimate packages and final design packages.
  • Responsible for the development and updating of  Standards.
  • Acts as a mentor and subject matter expert by providing engineering technical guidance to direct reports and between Central Engineering and the Plants.
  • Share plant specific knowledge within the team by closely interacting with the plants and mines and acts as a mentor for Engineers and Designers within Sudbury and North Atlantic Operations.

Education:

The ideal candidate possesses:

  • A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Professional Engineering Designation in the Province of Ontario.

Experience:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 15 years of experience of related and progressive experience.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in mechanical design for multi-disciplined projects
  • Experience in mechanical systems for both underground and surface mining, smelting and refining installations.
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code, Ontario Building Code requirements as they pertain to a mining environment both underground mines as well as surface plants.
  • Strong knowledge in the design of Industrial ventilation including dust collection systems, baghouses, make up air units, heating and ventilation units, pressurized water and steam boilers for building heating and domestic water heating. Codes and standards in the area in this area including CSA B139.1 Installation code for Fuel Fired Appliances, CSA B149.1 Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code, CSA B149.3 Code for the Field approval of Fuel Related Components on Appliances and Equipment, as well as the Ontario Fire Code. Standards from the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors association for the fabrication of metal ductwork and installation of Air moving equipment is also of benefit.
  • Strong knowledge of Fire Protection System Design, Maintenance including Automatic Sprinkler Systems, Fire Standpipes, Fire Hydrants, as well as some knowledge of clean agent self-contained fire suppression systems. Codes and standards in this area are NFPA 13 Automatic Sprinklers, NFPA 14 Standpipe and Hose Systems, and NFPA 2001 Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems.
  • Familiarity with Technical Standards and Safety Authority or TSSA along with a strong knowledge of the design of Pressure Vessels and Pressure piping systems using ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code, ASME B31.3 Process Piping Code, ASME Section VIII Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and ASME Section IX for Welding Brazing and Fusing relating to the Boiler Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Strong knowledge in various methods of Material Handling systems and Dust Control, using Pneumatic Conveyors, belt conveyors, screw conveyors and related components such as rotary feed valves, solids flow measurement such as impact plates, or continues weighing conveyors. SMACNA Industrial Duct Fabrication and Installation Standards for material transfer for low pressure Dilute phase material transport and ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code for material transfer for Dense phase material transport.
  • Experience in planning and estimating engineering hours for design projects
  • Experience writing equipment specifications and construction scopes of work
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understands and can apply risk assessment and Process Hazards Review processes
  • Ability to work independently to achieve outcomes with minimum supervision
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Is familiar with latest codes, acts and regulations and keeps abreast of technology and latest developments in his/her design field.
