Geological Site Characterisation

Are you a recent graduate with a Masters or PHD in Geological Engineering?  If so we have an exciting one year contract opportunity with a top utility client in the lower mainland of British Columbia.

Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with project and Engineering Design Practices (i.e. evaluation reports, technical specifications, proposals, estimates, design basis', calculations, hazard logs, test plans).
  • Plan and coordinate projects including preparation of project plans, design basis, field reviews and project reports, and specifications.
  • Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC Design Practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC.
  • Prepare engineering analysis and design deliverables in accordance with Design Practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and construction field support and undertake field reviews.
  • Site investigation planning, supervision and inspection for stations and dams including: layout of drill holes, test pits, field mapping, specification of test requirements, preparation and implementation of interim dam safety risk management plans, in-situ testing, logging of soils and rock, collecting samples, and the installation of instrumentation etc.
  • Collection, analysis and interpretation of data obtained from site investigations and other published sources, including survey data, LiDAR, satellite imagery, GIS, soil maps, papers, reports, etc.
  • Characterize soil and bedrock into distinct units and estimate engineering parameters for design based on the geologic history, site investigation data, and other published sources.
  • Develop geologic models based on an interpretation of available sources, including published sources, investigation data and other sources.
  • Assess the potential for and impacts of geohazards, including faults, earthquake hazards, landslides, weak soils, etc.
  • Design of rockfall protection measures including, mesh, anchors, shotcrete, barriers, etc.
  • Perform stability and seepage analyses of embankments, slopes and excavations
  • Perform embankment dam foundation design and performance assessment, including grouting, assessment and design of drainage, rock characterization, seepage cut-off, etc.
  • Design of geotechnical instrumentation and field installation. Knowledge of both conventional and remote sensing techniques including: weirs, inclinometers and earth pressure cells, fibre optic sensors, Automatic Data Acquisition Systems, downhole and crosshole seismic, SP, distributed temperature monitoring, etc.
  • Design of ground improvement and grouting programs; knowledge of grouting techniques for improvement of soil properties and permeability reduction including: grout mix design, tremie grouting, compaction grouting, jet grouting, grout curtains, cut off walls, void filling, dam foundation grouting, grout monitoring and control techniques.
  • Perform analysis related to geotechnical earthquake engineering and seismic hazard, liquefaction potential, seismic and deformation analysis of embankment dams, slopes, retaining structures, foundations etc.
  • Site supervision of earthwork construction.
  • Spatial analysis and assessment of geotechnical data in GIS.
  • Other miscellaneous services of a geotechnical engineering nature.
  • Document review for the development of 3D CADD and GIS models.

Additional Education and Skills

  • Degree in Geological Engineering.
  • Valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Currently registered as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Knowledge and experience in geological engineering including:
    • Rock mechanics
    • Surficial geology mapping
    • Soils and rock characterization
    • Local and regional geologic history
    • Geologic models
    • Soil mechanics

  • Working knowledge of relevant software, including Rocscience products (RS2, RocFall. Dips, etc., Geoslope (Slope/w, Seep/w, etc.), FLAC, PLAXIS,VERSAT, FEFLOW, MODFLOW, etc.
  • Ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative with limited supervision.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve challenging and unusual engineering problems by incorporating innovative design and/or analysis methods.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong proficiency of both written and oral communication in English and be able to prepare well-written technical reports and clearly present work to an audience.
  • Ability to provide technical directions to junior engineers
  • Ability to manage design tasks including scope, schedule and cost
  • Ability to find engineering solutions that add value and to reach consensus

The Project Engineer is a fully qualified and accredited engineering professional who applies theoretical and practical knowledge to provide engineering design, estimating, planning, and quality management services for low to medium complexity projects and/or operations safely, with quality, within budget, and on time.

Role Speciality P&C Design – Generation – Stations

Additional Experience and Role Accountabilities

  • This role requires experience with the design of Generation protection and control systems in electrical utility Generating stations.
  • The work is focused on the protection and control systems related to generating units and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Prepare project documentation and deliverables in accordance with project and Engineering Design Practices (i.e. evaluation reports, specifications, proposals, estimates, design basis', calculations, hazard logs, test plans).
  • Prepare design work packages including scope, duration, and level of effort estimates.
  • Prepare signed/sealed engineering deliverables as a Professional of Record (PoR) in accordance with EGBC and Design Practices.
  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC.
  • Prepare detailed designs and documentation for protection and control systems in substations with operating voltages from 12 kV to 500 kV in accordance with company and industry standards and practices.
  • Prepare detailed design packages (equipment layouts, single line diagrams, ac/dc schematics diagrams, cable schedules, wiring diagrams, material lists, external connections) required to install or modify equipment, including interfacing to the existing station systems, ready to issue and archive in the Drawing file system.
  • Specify and procure materials, panel assemblies and other related equipment.
  • Providing technical review of designs prepared by others following established practices.
  • Prepare reports detailing condition assessment investigations of facility equipment and systems, evaluation and analysis of the investigation, and recommendations to address any deficiencies found.
  • Provide technical guidance during equipment installation, calibration and commissioning.
  • Prepare commissioning test plans and summary of requirements documentation.
  • Provide training for end-users and peers on the theory and operational use of the installed or modified equipment/systems.

Program Manager – Asbestos

Our client, one of the largest energy suppliers in Canada has an immediate need for an Asbestos Program Manager to be responsible for the successful completion of low to medium risk infrastructure or other construction projects by leading cross-functional multi-disciplinary teams through project activities so that projects are completed successfully, safely, with quality, within budget, and on time. This is a 6-month contract located in Burnaby British Columbia.

More specifically, in this role you will be working on Provincial Asbestos Projects with a focus on Substations Inventory and Abatement.  The current project is nearing completion on scope but requires ongoing project management to complete inventory, process results, planning and execution of abatement requests and sustainment documentation. 

What you will be doing…

  • Plan, direct, and report on infrastructure and other construction project activities by consistently monitoring project benefits, resources and status and creating documents such as project plans, action logs, communication plans, status reports and post implementation reviews so that the project is implemented as planned. 
  • Role will be responsible for financial and project reporting, monitoring spend, maintaining inventory and ensuring remaining results come in at 100% quality and responding to requests for results (ability to communicate asbestos hazards and how to apply to other work). 
  • Develop project plans and risk management plans for low to medium risk infrastructure or other construction projects with a capital cost that is generally up to $20 million for effective management throughout the project lifecycle. 
  • Role will assist with finalizing inventory system needs, metrics reporting development for compliancy and transitioning to sustainment.
  • Manage multiple activities effectively such as quality assurance, engineering, First Nations and stakeholder engagement, communication, regulatory approvals, procurement, planning and controls, construction management, pre-commissioning, employee relations, and safety by using project management principles in monitoring progress and establishing standards for implementation to keep the project within allotted time and budget. 
  • Complete project management activities including scoping, planning, managing, monitoring, and reporting on project tasks by using intermediate skills in Microsoft Office as well as project management programs to fulfill the client’s business needs.
  • Maintain meaningful relationships with stakeholders including customers, engineers and field crews through regular communication using excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills enabling timely progression of projects.
  • Will require travel to site to work with abatement contractors and monitor abatement work.  

What you will need to succeed…

  • A minimum five (5) years of project management experience or equivalent.

What you will be doing…

Scope & Duties:

  • Estimating and planning large capital projects/programs with a focus on rehabilitation work, upgrades and expansions to existing facilities.
  • Ensure that work is not only technically correct but also complies with business drivers and goals, standards, policies, practices and processes.
  • Working with multidisciplinary project teams (internal or external), including managing the scope, schedule and cost of assigned Work Packages.

Our client, one of the largest energy suppliers in Canada has an immediate need for a Creative Designer to provide expert level graphic design and creative services. This is a 2-month contract located in Vancouver British Columbia.

How you will bring value…

In this role, you will plan, develop concepts, and produce creative artwork for the client’s internal and external advertising promotional material publications (including brochures, newsletters, annual reports, pamphlets, posters, technical manuals, maps, forms, overheads, banners, digital assets, videos, and signage). You will support the production of final projects by providing production details for external vendors and others. You will also provide project support as required to interpret client needs and guide projects to successful completion.

What you will be doing…

  • Plan, coordinate, design, edit, and produce a range of internal and external client advertising, promotional material and publications to meet the client’s brand standard requirements in the set time frame.
  • Interpret or provide sketches, photos, text, and written instructions to conceptualize projects.
  • Work with the Creative Production Coordinator to evaluate work requests and creative briefs.
  • Compose, write, and edit communication materials including newsletters, management reports, and presentations, and using knowledge of project management principles to support assigned business groups within the client.
  • Meet with the client and Creative Services Manager to discuss project specifications and determine objectives, size, style, space limitations, desired presentation quality, color, texture, paper stock, and provide specs to client while following brand standards.
  • Determine the appropriate graphic software application and methods to be used in the design of specific projects.
  • Use a variety of graphic design software to create original artwork, icons, drawings, and refine and edit photographic files for final reproduction stage.
  • Collaborate with various business teams within the client by building strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders for quality projects and strategic initiatives to be completed safely, within budget, and on time.
  • Use photo editing software to design and manipulate artwork to achieve desired results.
  • Use vector graphics editing software to design, create, and manipulate original artwork.
  • Use publishing and typesetting software to layout complex projects.
  • Liaise with clients at the beginning of projects to determine feasibility, impact, and audience, and manage the project during the proofing process with the client to incorporate revisions or additions and incorporate ideas from multiple contributors as well as solicit feedback for troubleshooting and creative input and provide peer coaching to improve operational excellence.
  • Prepare detailed production instructions and printing specifications for external vendors, printers, magazines, and newspapers including reviewing online or physical color proofs if required.
  • Support clients by manipulating a variety of artwork, photos, negatives, slides, and convert transfers, extracts, and compress digital files and photographs for PC, Mac, and web platforms.
  • Maintain digital files of illustrations, previous publications and artwork, and provide paper stock and production samples.
  • Control and maintain image and digital file library.

What you will need to succeed…

  • Certificate or diploma in graphic design, digital design, or a related field (such as marketing or communications), or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in a graphic design or digital design job involved in graphics, layout and web publishing using experience with Adobe Creative Suite in a work server environment.
  • Provide a portfolio of work to demonstrate experience.
  • Ability to plan, design, layout and produce a wide range of artwork.
  • Knowledge of industry standard pre-press and print production techniques.
  • Ability to interpret clients’ project objectives and explain design concepts to clients.
  • Ability to create original artwork using advanced graphic software (such as Adobe Creative Suite). 
  • Ability to estimate lead times and production requirements to determine timeline milestones for graphics and artwork assignments. 
  • Ability to coordinate, monitor and ensure projects and assignments meet required deadlines.

Your role is to develop relationships with manufacturers and distributors of energy efficient products and technologies, and to provide technical, project administrative, and system support for the online e-catalogue website and database to enable customers and members of the industry to interactively search and review information regarding energy efficient products available from various manufacturers.

What you will be doing…

  • Develop relationships with manufacturers and distributors of energy efficient products and technologies in order to screen and add new products, maintain database integrity, content and security, and develop and maintain partner relationships and agreements.
  • Provide technical, project, administrative and system support for the e – catalogue web site and database software such as coordinating and facilitating changes, enhancements, testing and implementation of new features or changes to the e-catalogue database, liaising and ensuring application support personnel, IT developers, consultants, technical experts or software vendors deliver solutions to meet business requirements, and coordinating, developing and conducting training and familiarization sessions and related training materials, as well as following up to ensure end user problems are resolved in a satisfactory and timely manner.
  • Add or modify the e-catalogue product and item listings and information where new or modified program, product or service offerings occur by meeting and discussing program, product or service plans and changes with other Conservation & Energy Management (C&EM) staff, contacting new or existing manufacturers and suppliers to locate sources and supply channels for new products or services, developing and implementing product and product line procedures and process guidelines, responding to and resolving e-catalogue related customer, trade ally or supplier concerns and questions, and preparing various summary reports on software products and product line performance.
  • Compose, write, and edit communication materials including newsletters, management reports, and presentations using skills in communication, planning, and implementation as well as knowledge of project management principles to support assigned business groups at the client.
  • Coordinate and support tracking tools and create progress reports for formal programs and projects by using skills in MS Office and document management systems such as SharePoint so that assigned projects and initiatives are successfully implemented as planned.
  • Contribute to the development of communication plans by using consultative methodologies and techniques including online platforms to accurately determine communication needs of the assigned project or initiative.

Our client, one of the largest energy suppliers in Canada has an immediate need for a Services Contracts Manager to perform contract management for a new Engineering Services contract under which multiple projects will be utilizing the contract. This is a 6-month contract located in Burnaby British Columbia.

In this role you will provide post award and pre award contract management services, so that projects and ongoing operations are delivered safely, with a high quality, within budget, and on time. Contracts handled are rated from medium to high complexity. You will not only perform the day-to-day contract management, but also assist in the design and implementation of innovative strategies to enhance vendor management and optimize the client’s contract spend.

What you will be doing…

  • Perform contract management activities through the application of expert contract management practices, while working effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on a monthly basis the expenditures on all client contracts.
  • Ensure the client and suppliers fulfill their contractual obligations by monitoring contract performance, identifying issues, taking timely action to resolve issues, and communicating with stakeholders to minimize risk and maximize supplier performance.
  • Establish and maintain a meaningful relationship between suppliers, stakeholders, and the client’s supply chain organization through activities such as timely communication, resolution of issues, and relevant reporting enabling the successful implementation of sourcing initiatives.
  • Forecast, monitor, and report on contract usage to ensure the client’s contract and finance control policies and budget requirements are met.
  • Provide guidance and advice to client groups in the sourcing, procurement, and management of goods and services contracts using excellent knowledge of public sector procurement law, and the application of supply chain concepts to get the best value for the client.
  • Perform day to day contract management activities including, but not limited to, attending and/or chairing progress meetings, monitoring schedules, expediting, drafting of change documents as required, facilitate change processes, negotiations, facilitating and negotiation of claims and disputes as required, forecasting, accrual reporting, validation of payment requests, tracking of contract submittals and other deliverables, monitor document controls and contract interpretation.
  • Review procurement plans, contracting plans, scopes of work, specifications, and support RFP/RFT documents from a post award contract management perspective.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Adapts personal communication style to meet the needs of the audience for more effective communication

  • 8+ years of experience in contract management.
  • Ability to work with and influence others (including internal and external stakeholders).

This is a 8-month contract located in Burnaby British Columbia.

What you will be doing…

  • Develop safe engineering solutions using initiative and judgment to perform activities such as developing designs, analyzing and resolving problems, and interpreting engineering specifications for various projects and operations.
  • Propose changes in plans and estimated costs, recommend payment for work completed by contractors, preparing progress reports, coordinating work schedules.
  • Participate in the client’s engineering practice by conducting independent studies and analysis, exercising judgement in selecting and interpreting information, recommending safe engineering designs, and making decisions related to standard methods and designs so the client’s engineering standards are maintained.
  • Perform periodic tasks including on-site construction quality control and monitoring to ensure design compliance.

  • Familiarity with CAD systems and drawing standards.

  • Provide technical assistance and construction support in the field and undertake field reviews as required by EGBC.
  • Prepare detailed designs and documentation for protection and control systems in substations with operating voltages from 12 kV to 500 kV in accordance with the client’s and industry standards and practices.
  • Providing technical review of designs prepared by others following established practices.
  • Prepare reports detailing condition assessment investigations of facility equipment and systems, evaluation and analysis of the investigation, and recommendations to address any deficiencies found.
  • Provide technical guidance during equipment installation, calibration and commissioning.
  • Prepare commissioning test plans and summary of requirements documentation.
  • Provide training for end-users and peers on the theory and operational use of the installed or modified equipment/systems.
