Ian Martin Workforce is working with a reputable transportation/ construction company that is involved in one of the largest transportation expansions projects in Toronto history. As a new teammate within the safety team, you are responsible for developing, implementing and sustaining programs, policies and practices related to safety compliance and accident prevention for multiple sites and departments, ensuring public safety.

Daily Tasks include:

  • Interaction with government agencies on safety compliance matters, and coordination of safety compliance and accident prevention projects with cross-functional departments as well as consultants.
  • Eliminate or control hazardous conditions resulting from human error, equipment and machine operations which may lead to human injury and/or property damage.
  • Liaison and work closely with various business units including safety communications group; asset management group in relation to railway infrastructure; stations and bus
  • Working with safety communication on inquires relating to public safety 
  • Subject matter expert for enterprise public safety; to consult, advise and provide recommendations on public safety policy
  • Participate in accident / incident investigations relating to public safety 
  • Assists in development of safety training materials and presentations
  • Research and advise on innovative public safety solutions 

 

Key Skills  / Qualifications 

  • Diploma or Degree in Public Safety, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements governing transportation (e.g. Highway Traffic Act, Railway Safety Act, Occupational Health & Safety Act).
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, including excellent public speaking skills

Rail Construction Specialist

Rail Construction Specialist

Ian Martin Workforce is working with a reputable transportation/ construction company that is involved in one of the largest transportation expansions projects in Toronto history. As a new teammate within the safety team you will be be responsible of daily construction management project works in terms of safety, quality and environment, ensuring that safety issues are resolved in a timely manner.

Daily Activities:

  • Lead, motivate and manage and/ or Construction Management Assistants. Act as a role-model for them in terms of behaviours and values, and mentor their professional development.
  • Undertake the construction management and/ or supervision of project works.
  • Comply with construction management processes and effectively implement them.
  • Apply a consistent approach to construction management, implementation of processes and the management of contractors.
  • Provide construction management input to the project works, particularly advice regarding construction/ implementation/ constructability, attendance at pre-possession planning meetings, construction/ implementation reviews and QSRA meetings.
  • Undertake appropriate liaison with the Maintainer when the project works will/ may affect Maintained Assets.
  • Evaluate the progress on site against the programme and agreed milestones. Use this information to provide accurate updates to the project team and agreed reporting lines.
  • Assist the Project Manager for the project works in the review of Work Package Plans, Task Briefing Sheets, commissioning plans and other project documentation.
  • Undertake, or arrange for others to undertake, suitable inspections/ audits for the project works being managed in regard to safety, quality, environment, engineering/ design compliance, functionality and commissioning.
  • Understands the regulatory guidelines of Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), Transport Canada Safety Rules (TCSR), and Track Worker Safety Instructions (TWSI) as necessary.
  • Ensure infrastructure activities are fully compliant with prevailing safety regulatory policy, best practices, and emerging issues respecting railway safety guidelines

Key Skills  / Qualifications

  • Demonstrable successful construction management experience.
  • Relevant experience for the specialist area of construction management being undertaken.
  • Understanding of the CDM Regulations and health & safety legislation, regulations and industry practices.
  • Demonstrable experience of the implementation of health, safety, environmental and quality management processes.
  • Contract and commercial awareness.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to operate effectively in the site environment.
  • Experience within the rail industry.
  • Must hold a valid class G drivers license

As a new teammate within the safety team you will be the primary contact for all communication matters for the Safety division. The team will communicate ongoing safety project activities with various business units and you will prepare, coordinate and distribute safety information to the public.

Daily Tasks include:

 

  • Manages the documentation of effective and coordinated communication processes, messaging, and systems to provide timely current and upcoming corporate safety project activity updates to various business units
  • Provides messaging services to support the project teams, procurement and other relevant stakeholders (internal / external) when conveying various safety project activities
  • Creates and releases safety bulletins to internal and external stakeholders
  • Assists with the preparation of periodic (i.e. monthly, quarterly, annual) safety project status reports for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Develops implements, maintains, and ensures the consistent use and application of procedures used for safety project messaging; work with the Manager, Safety Policy & Practice to ensure consistency

  • Promotes safety by developing and communicates corporate wide initiatives  
  • Ensures internal communications messages are consistent across all mediums and for different departments of Safety.  
  • Leads change for continuous improvement of digital communications with a focus on the strategic alignment of communication goals and services with internal departments.
  • Manages the development of creative and editorial content for social media and web communications including video, graphics, and other online publications.  
  • Drafts messages, scripts  and presentations to senior executives 
  • Keeps stakeholders abreast of progress and answers their questions related to all safety matters
  • Adheres to branding and copyright laws governing symbols, designs, and written or visual material used in print materials, web site, multimedia, or displays
  • Incorporates change management strategies in communications activities and projects to support business needs

Key Skills  / Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Daily Tasks

  • Advises on, and as appropriate leads, activities related to project scope, definition, risk management, and quality assurance to ensure projects deliver expected outcomes
  • Performs complete start to close-out project management on complex projects to ensure projects meet defined objectives, scope, budget and timelines
  • Establishes, manages and directs resources to ensure the necessary level and capabilities are represented on a project team in order to ensure successful delivery of the project
  • Provides direction and advice to staff and personnel assigned to individual projects, through all project stages (e.g. on administrative, design, editing, technical, estimating, and priority issues as appropriate)

  • Develops and delivers reports and presentations defining plans, issues, status and resolutions to appropriate levels of management
  • Partners with Procurement to develop value-for-money procurement models to meet project outcomes as necessary 
  • Leads and coaches members of diverse and cross functional project teams, including consultants, in project management practices (e.g. project scope, budget, schedule, quality, risk, safety, etc.) to ensure projects deliver their outcomes within scope, budget and timelines.

Key Skills / Qualifications 

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in business administration or related discipline,or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed equivalent
  • Demonstrates progressive experience in project management, planning, budgeting, prioritization and risk management, which preferably includes the deployment or implementation of large scale initiatives
  • Demonstrates organizational and collaborative skills with various stakeholders

Daily Tasks Include: 

  • Develops and implements internal systems to monitor compliance with established policies and procedures 
  • Conduct hazard identification activities, recommend and assess risk and implement control methods
  • Audit the work of external contractors for compliance and risk mitigation
  • Maintains contractor safety records and coordinates the required roll-up to the Safety Data reporting team

As a new teammate within the department you will carry out investigations of incidents, analyzes system wide trends and facilitates solutions for the purpose of ensuring a safe environment for employees and customers

Daily Task Include:

  • Conducting investigations of incidents with the objective of collecting all relevant information and identifying root causes  by: 
  • Conducting on-site investigations during and after an incident; gathering information, conducting analysis, and developing after-action report regarding the incident; preparing incident investigation forms and report templates
  • Supports the Safety Management System post-incident review of safety critical incidents to assess root cause through effective evidence collections.
  • Oversee interaction with contractors & sub-contractors, accidents, inspections, root cause analysis, OSHA compliance, scheduling, investigations.
  • Identify hazards in operations and shortcomings in safety and health programs, as well as identify and recommend the corrective actions necessary to prevent future incidents.
  • Present accident investigation findings to various business streams and senior management 
  • Liase with the Security division to obtain additional information relevant to the investigation

Key Skills / Qualifications 

  • Knowledge of investigative techniques and procedures in investigations, such as: preserve / document scene; collect information; determine root causes; implement corrective actions)
  • Knowledge of accident prevention principles, practices, and procedures

  • Support the development and maintenance of models and tools for operational safety risk identification
  • Validations on important models across the business including traditional  models as well as predictive modeling techniques
  • Perform necessary work to validate significant changes on critical/important models
  • Act as a liaison between the safety risk team and the businesses to strengthen partnerships and identify opportunities for value creation via risk mitigation, improved modeling methods and efficiencies
