Job Summary: 

 

To provide Engineering support to the North Atlantic Surface Projects and Studies team from the study phase through to execution.  Since most of the engineering is provided by external consultants this role is more of a coordination role.

 

Accountabilities:

 

  • Follow individual departmental safety plan
  • Prepare Scopes of Work for studies and execution projects
  • Contribute to technical reviews of tender documents
  • Arrange kickoff meetings for studies and participate in project execution kickoff meetings
  • Monitor study work through weekly routines to ensure that budget, scope, and schedule requirements are being met
  • Ensure that consultant work meets Vale standards and is filed obtained and filed appropriately
  • Prepare HSE documentation for AFE submission and aid in preparation of AFE and APC’s
  • Review invoices for correctness
  • Input Engineering tracking requests
  • Work with operations and field supervisory staff to ensure that design issues are made transparent and addressed promptly
  • Escalate design issued to Area Manager as required
  • Ensure lessons learned database is kept current
  • Schedule FEL studies and construction projects as required
  • Participate in project forecasting
  • Prepare monthly project routine presentations
  • Coordinate field inspections, commissioning, QA/CC work on projects
  • Prepare handover packages
  • Provide technical assistance in the preparation of FWI’s
  • Participate in constructability reviews
  • Participate in PHRs for both studies and execution projects
  • Ensure that operating representation is available for PHRs
  • Review drawings, technical specifications, functional descriptions for content, quality and correctness

Mine Engineer

The Opportunity:

The Mine Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, scheduling, and budgeting of Mine Operations. He/She is also responsible to consult with other technical staff such as geologists and metallurgical engineers to determine best mining practices and set goals for the Mine Operations department.  
 
This 18 Month Contract position is based at a Northern mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation. This position is on a one week on, one week off rotation. 
 
Accountabilities:

  • Collect, document, and assess engineering data within the mine to improve efficiency;
  • Record and control mine engineering related information to generate monthly production reports;
  • Develop the plan that will be followed to mine the deposits;
  • Produce open pit mine designs using the ore body block models, decide what methods and equipment will be used for accessing and extracting ore and waste material and provide a schedule for the removal of this material;
  • Consult with geologists and engineers about the design, selection, and provision of machines, facilities, and systems for mining, and infrastructure such as access roads, water and power supplies;
  • Liaise and coordinate with the operations supervisor to ensure there is proper implementation of the plans; 
  • Ensure mining regulations are followed, including the proper use and care of explosives, and the correct ventilation to allow the removal of dust and gases;
  • Use software provided to assist with calculations, prepare budget, and cost forecasting/reporting estimates on the cost of the operation and control expenditure when mines come into production; 
  • Provide input for cost development and life of mine scheduling;
  • Shared responsibility for the estimation and preparation of the Mineral Resource Mineral Reserve statement for the mine. 

 
Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng) designation is required.  

 
Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role within an industrial and/or mining environment. 

 
Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to effectively communicate the mine plan to the Mine Operations Group and provide technical assistance as required.
  • Ability to design blast patterns, stockpiles, and dumps and provide innovative solutions to mine related problems.
  • Provide assistance to Operating, Geological, and Survey Staff in mine planning; indicating blast designs, mine schedules, and production plans.
  • Ability to assist with specialized projects requiring the application of mine engineering knowledge.
  • Knowledge in open pit and underground mining.

Senior Engineer – Ground Control

The Opportunity:

The Ground Control Engineer is part of the Technical Services – Engineering Team. The incumbent will initially play a key role in the development of the Operational Readiness Plan, for the future underground mining operations. Specifically, this role will be required to provide ongoing input to the design and construction details of the mine expansion, as well as develop/update Ground Control & backfill procedures and practices for the underground mine 
 
The Senior Engineer – Ground Control performs tasks with some supervision, set deadlines, responsibilities, monitors, and summarizes progress of the mining activities and rock mass response to mining in underground operations and/or in geomechanical projects for the mining operations.  They will also ensure that health and safety standards are met, legislated requirements are satisfied, and strategies for improving safety and profitability of the mine are provided.   
 
This is a permanent position based at a Northern Labrador Mine site, on a two week on, two week off rotation with an initial assignment in the St. John’s Project Office. 

Accountabilities:

  • Participate in the development of procedures/standards related to the field of ground control;
  • Provide technical support, advise and assist the mine operators and technical staff regarding ground control strategies and methods;
  • Compile information of geological structures and undertake geological mapping in both underground and open pit operations;
  • Perform stability assessments and advise on potential adverse ground conditions for both the underground openings and the pit walls using both empirical and numerical modeling tools;
  • Ensure compliance with ground control related regulations, policies and standards at both underground and open pit operations;
  • Recommend action to ensure that safety and stability of underground mine excavations and pit walls are maintained with respect to geotechnical and legislated requirements; 
  • Develop solutions with respect to day-to-day ground control issues based on field observations or operation reports;
  • Evaluate mining proposals and layouts to ensure conformity with ground control practice and established procedures;
  • Complete geomechanics project work involving mining methods, stope and pillar design and mining sequencing for underground and/or surface deposits; 
  • Respond rapidly to ground control issues and failures as required. Complete appropriate reporting and initiate action plans that will remove potential future hazards both in the affected area and similar areas;
  • Regularly monitor the ground control work, including Q/A and Q/C of ground support installation in the underground operation;
  • Install and develop ground movement monitoring program by using instrumentation;
  • Support the Project team to: carry out task observations, provide training on cementing/shotcreting methods, draft technical memos and develop paste backfill testing and design, etc.;
  • Update and maintain the Ground Control Management Plan with inputs from various departments at the mine site;
  • Interact with and manage consultants as required. 

 
Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering o Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mining Engineering, specializing in Rock Mechanics/Geotechnical Engineering would be considered an asset.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is required. 

 
Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of Geotechnical Engineering and/or underground mining experience is required. 

 
Knowledge and Skills:  

  • A good understanding of basic rock mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering principles, assessment techniques, remedial methods, instrumentation and products.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.  
  • Ability to work closely with several departments, including: Operations, Environment, Mines Technical Service Department and Project team. 
  • Geomechanical numerical modeling and ground control instrumentation knowledge would be an asset

Instrument Technologist

Our Port Colborne operation is currently seeking an instrument technologist for a long term contract. The successful candidate will maintain and improve the reliability of production by installing/replacing and calibrating quality instrumentation.

Accountabilities:

  • Safely install, test, debug and troubleshoot various pieces of equipment, preforming inspections as required.
  • Safely perform Preventative Maintenance work to meet production schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair instrumentation equipment problems and breakdowns to reduce impact on operations.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blue prints, electrical diagrams and OEM Manuals.
  • Follow established Company Health, Safety and Environment policies and procedures
  • Availability for repair of emergency breakdowns/unscheduled call-ins 24 hours/day and participate in rotating “on-call” schedule by carrying a cellphone and responding to address production downtime related to instrumentation.
  • Report deviations to established procedures and provide required documentation of work performed.

Planner Scheduler

We are seeking an intermediate or senior planner to join our team due to new projects. This role is a one year contract located in Sudbury, ON. 
 

The Opportunity: 

Provide planning and scheduling services to support all surface capital projects within the group. The scope of the work is from the conceptual to the planning and implementation phases in order to ensure that projects present a realistic project timeline. These timelines will be used to develop FEL 3 studies and full project execution plans. The quality and quantity of the planning and scheduling have a direct impact on the success of the projects.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for developing a realistic project plan and schedule to meet the project objectives.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all standard procedures and systems for project planning and scheduling are followed, per the companies Project Delivery System (PDS).

  • Performs regular quality checks and signs off on project schedules.
  • Reviews contracted 3rd party work plans and schedules for accuracy, thoroughness and completion.
  • Review and monitor planning and scheduling initiatives in support of the PDS throughout the life of the project.
  • Provide training for scheduler/planners on Primavera and on the PDS project scheduling guideline.

Experience: 

  • Excellent knowledge of Primavera P6 and provides overview and expert advice for the use of Primavera and Microsoft Project on various capital projects.
  • 5+ years experience as a planner scheduler on large capital projects. 
  • Construction planning, scheduling and hands on experience preferred
